A special place
It's typical - create a world
A special place of my design
To never cope, never care
Just use the key, cause he's alone...

For some reason this is the song that seems to crash my thoughts with the greatest frequency as I stroll through the Underground or the Beach on the KU Campus. I look at the sea of faces around me, watch their emotions, and allow the song to play. Maybe I should explain.
Have you noticed how 4 out of every 5 people that you see on the street have these little pieces of plastic attached to the ends of wire dangling from their ears? They look like hospital patients with gadgets in their ears instead of their noses. They stroll along, maybe making eye contact - maybe not, and intersecting with little of what goes on around them. As I observed the other day, a girl walking down the street the was oblivious to a car filled with males that were clearly captivated by her. She didn't appear to hear their comments either. Yep, oblivious. Welcome my friend to the i-pod /cell phone /drive through /pay-at-the-pump 21st Century Humanity... welcome to my generation.
It is incredible how easy it is to close out the world, but we cannot escape it. We try to hide our pain in the facade that all is well and good. We mask the pain with facebook, cell phones, i-pods, busyness, and friends. Nothing slakes the hunger for more.
We are alone, we are hurting, and we are angry.
Don Cheadle's character from the movie Crash states, "It's the sense of touch... We're behind metal and glass. Think we miss that touch so much, we crash into each other just to feel something." Even though the emphasis of this film was on the disconnected sprawl of L.A., it is something that we see "here" (whereever here is for you). We are slowly becoming more disconnected as a society and are losing our feel to be able to relate with others. There is something safe about putting a pair of headphones in your ears and taking a walk down the street or to class. There is something secure in not having to deal with anybody you may encounter, somehow hoping the the plastic jewels in your ears will be a quarintine flag to those that might see you. "Please don't talk to me, I am listening to music right now. Come again later... maybe."
It is very easy to be selfish in today's society. Literally, with these things we have created our own world to our liking.
People are hurting, people need attention. I guess that this is just a blurb into cyberspace. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense and makes Dave sound like he is wacky a bitter. I am not bitter or wacky. I guess I am brushing shoulders with those in pain, which is making me look around all the more. There is so much pain in the eyes of those around you. Look at them, but also take notice of the one in the mirror. Love my friends, love...
Random. Till later. If you brush against someone else's pain, hold them awhile and share it with them. Jesus was good at that (although he removes pain.) God bless...
